Chilling discovery: You may be missing out on £4.5k and a warmer home

Access funding for a warmer home through Thrift Energy

The Winter is well and truly on its way, were you having your breakfast and watching ‘Good Morning Britain’ from a chilly home that is costing more to heat than it should?

If so, you may have spotted Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ slot, where he delivered a fact more chilling than the current weather: Millions are missing out on up to £4.5k per year in Attendance Allowance, and access to funding for a warmer home because they aren’t claiming the finances they’re rightfully entitled to.

Worse still if you’re missing out on the money, you may also be missing out on a warm home that helps you save money whilst reducing environmental harm! Attendance Allowance is a financial benefit that entitles you to funding through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). This funding covers costs relating to energy saving upgrades such as Insulation and Heating, delivered by accredited installers, Thrift Energy.

According to financial support charity ‘Turn2Us’, Attendance Allowance is designated to those with care needs, who need help with daily living and activities. They state:

”You may have care needs if you need help with activities of daily living, such as getting dressed, going to the toilet or having someone to look after you so you do not hurt yourself.

It could include help outside the home. It does not matter if no one actually gives this help, as long as you can show you need it.

You can have any type of disability or illness, including sight or hearing impairments, or mental health issues such as dementia or depression.”

Cambridgeshire Refurbishment Scheme Success

Thrift Energy is celebrating  major achievement after becoming involved in an extensive refurbishment scheme on up to 1000 properties in the Cambridgeshire area – not only improving residents homes but also, this week, employing eight new members of staff in the local area who had recently lost  jobs.

We are the largest contractor involved in the scheme which includes carrying out extensive external wall insulation works to improve the energy efficiency and aesthetics of privately owned, rented and social housing in Cambridgeshire. The scheme was funded by a consortium of District Councils in Cambridgeshire, using funds from The Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), which provided a community fund of £7.5 million to assist in making residents homes more comfortable and warm as well as assisting in lowering occupants energy bills.

The scheme predicts savings of up to £450 per annum for residents living in an average sized semi-detached house along with an average reduction of 1,900kg in CO2 emissions for the same type of property. Thrift Energy has had major involvement in the scheme installing external wall insulation, complete with a colour rendered finish, to over 300 properties in the area, along with other energy saving measures being installed such as loft insulation and condensing boilers.

We’ve also, this week, employed eight new members of staff following the announcement that another main contractor on the scheme – Climate Energy – has gone into administration, announced earlier this month. Those employed include assessors, surveyors, quality control, customer services and delivery personnel who had a major and positive influence on the scheme since it began.

Derek Campbell, our Managing Director at Thrift Energy commented, “The job losses affected some key individuals that had been working on the scheme who had a huge amount of knowledge, expertise and involvement from the start. Thrift Energy made the bold decision to employ eight members of staff that were affected in order to ensure, not only the security of their employment, but also so that residents experienced minimal disruption and the scheme continued to be delivered as seamlessly as it could be”.

With 366 properties now completed we expect another 600 properties will be refurbished by the time the scheme finishes in August 2016.

We will be honouring work for all customers who have paid a deposit to Climate Energy and have agreed, with the administrators, to take over customer contracts and proceed with works at the agreed price, subject to their own survey. Customers affected by the administration of Climate Energy can contact Thrift Energy on 01353 72 33 33.
